ASA 106 Advanced Coastal Cruising Study Guide

Our ASA 106 Advanced Coastal Cruising Study Guide provides you with all the information you need meet the ASA 106 Standards and to breeze through the ASA 106 Advanced Coastal Cruising examination.

We discuss each ASA 106 Advanced Coastal Cruising Standard separately to ensure you have all the information needed to answer every question on the ASA 106 Advanced Coastal Cruising examination without difficulty.

The Advanced Coastal Cruising course covers a large volume of material making it difficult to sort through and absorb what you need to know.

With that in mind, we have written our ASA 106 Study Guide in a concise and easy-to-understand format.

Tim Benson with Charlotte Harbor Sailing, Florida, (A.S.A. outstanding school in 2008), says our Advanced Coastal Cruising Study Guide is “spot on – there should have been something like this a long time ago.”

Harry Polly, A.S.A. instructor and owner of the Tejas Sailing School in Dallas, Texas says: “I think your ASA 106 Study Guide is just what an ASA candidate needs to get ready for the ASA 106 course.”

Our ASA 106 Study Guide is used by sailing schools and instructors throughout the U.S.A. and the Caribbean. We use over 30 illustrations to clearly explain some of the more complex topics covered by the ASA 106 Advanced Coastal Cruising course. Subjects like: sail theory and pressure differential, the relationship between weather/lee helm and the sails Center of Effort (CE) and the hulls Center of Lateral Resistance (CLR), rigging a tow with/without a towing bridle, various methods of anchoring to reduce swing, different ways of recovering a fouled anchor, rafting and much more.

The ASA 106 Advanced Coastal Cruising suggested text is over 383 pages long. Although interesting, the ASA 106 suggested text covers topics which are not necessary for the ASA 106 Advanced Cruising course. (Example: Ballast/Displacement Ratios, Radar operation, construction methods and materials and more).

More importantly, the ASA 106 suggested text actually fails to provide information on all the ASA 106 course standards. In other words, you could read the entire suggested text and still not be able to answer all the questions on the ASA 106 exam!

Here is are a few examples:

  • ASA 106 Standard #19 asks you to describe how to pass a tow to another boat. Topic not covered in the required text;
  • ASA 106 Standard #27 requires you to describe corrective measures for dealing with electrolysis. You cannot find a discussion of electrolysis in the suggested text – in fact, electrolysis is not even mentioned in the index of the text;
  • ASA 106 Standard #30 requires you to know how to properly ground a boat permanently or temporarily in order to protect against lightning. Again, no where in the required ASA 106 text is rigging a temporary grounding system to protect against lightning discussed!

Now you can relax, we have taken away all the pressure and stress associated with studying and last minute cramming for an exam. Our ASA 106 Advanced Cruising course Study Guide provides you with all the information you need to easily pass the challenging ASA 106 Advanced Coastal Cruising written examination.

We will even send you a practice exam and answer key so when you write the actual ASA 106 Exam, you will feel like you have written it before.
